What to do When Your Client Sucks!

What to do When Your Client Sucks! This week, consider which clients you need to fire. Then do it! Bad clients can steal your soul and ruin your business… After hearing from others, three different versions of the “bad client” story within the last month, I became inspired to write this blog post and encourage you to take a stand by serving only those clients that appreciate the value, expertise and experience gained by working with your firm.

It’s probably not a stretch of imagination to state that at some point in time, you’ve had bad clients that meet one or more of the following characteristics:

  1. They are not in your pre-identified niche.
  2. They complain about your fee.
  3. They do not appreciate your value.
  4. They complain about the quality of work and are dissatisfied with delivered results.

How did you place yourself in the predicament of serving bad clients? Chances are you:

  1. Decided to take on this new client to meet a revenue goal.
  2. Didn’t listen to early signals sent during the business development process that this company was difficult to work with…
  3. Continually make excuses as to why it is OK for a client to abuse you or your employees.

What happens when your firm continues to try and serve bad clients?

  1. You will lose stomach lining from the stress.
  2. Your employees will become demoralized and disengaged because working for bad clients is stressful for them too.
  3. Future revenues will suffer because your brand becomes “the story this bad client openly shares with others.”
  4. Your profits will suffer because it is nearly impossible to profitably serve a client who is never satisfied.

In the long run, running your firm will be more fun and profitable when brand equity is built from delivering positive client experiences, which then leads to more client referrals. Ecstatic client experiences occur when employees are inspired and engaged to do their best work. Do everyone you work with a favor this week and create the right environment to make it happen!
