Leaving the Bubble of Lost Opportunity

Leaving the bubble of lost opportunityHave you ever wondered how many opportunities are lost because of the desire to stay inside your personal comfort zone?  It is human nature to stay the course because doing so is perceived as being safe and risk-free.  The strange thing about human nature is that many times the riskiest thing you can do in business and life is maintain the status quo.

Opportunity in business comes from personal growth and doing what matters consistently well

I would like to highlight Palmer Residential which is owned by Ron and Micheline Palmer.  The Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties recently honored members at the annual Remodeling Excellence (REX) Awards banquet at the Bellevue Westin Hotel.  Palmer Residential won a REX award for best remodel in the $50,000-$90,000 Kitchen category.

While the REX award is given for craftsmanship, true success at Palmer Residential comes from consistently delivering a Nordstrom-like buying experience throughout an entire home remodel project.  Palmer Pride is the first thing taught during each new employee’s 12-week onboarding, resulting in a difference that matters to clients because each member of the Palmer team learns to own the responsibility of helping homeowners realize their vision AND enjoy the process!  For the Palmers, staying true to this vision and committing to improve the external and internal elements of their business requires NOT maintaining the status quo.  Stretching the comfort zone is an effective strategy.

Opportunities in life come from the same place

During the past weekend, I drove to Spokane and spent a couple of days with my son Alex, who decided to not come home for the summer and instead rent a home with his college friends.  While golfing on Saturday, Alex mentioned that that his life to date has been like living in a bubble; meaning that growing up on Mercer Island and attending Gonzaga University is not representative of life in general.  That was a pretty astute observation and led to a great conversation!

We talked about how personal growth comes from obtaining different perspectives, seeking new friendships and seizing opportunities to become a well-rounded person by trying new things.  Carrie and I are fortunate to have three children (now young adults) that are pursuing their different paths in life with a desire to grow, succeed and experience what life can offer.  We had a great visit and while it is never easy saying goodbye to your children (at any age) it is comforting for Carrie and me to know that each of our three children has a growth mindset and desires to become a better person with every passing year.

What about you

What can you do to leave the bubble of lost opportunity and avoid staying inside your comfort zone?
