Investing in the Change You Need

Investing in the Change You NeedIf you are a small business owner and believe that winning in the game of business is a team sport, then why is “working longer hours” often times the default answer to solving your most challenging business problems? If you ask me, that’s akin to running faster on the metaphorical hamster wheel.

Most often than not, the best solutions only come after engaging with the right people and bringing a new viewpoint to challenges that often times can easily be overcome by shifting perspective and taking in new information. Usually, the result is a better outcome with less effort. Why don’t most small business owners do this? In a word, they become ISOLATED. Don’t let this happen to you! Build the right relationships, starting today…

One myth of being a small business owner is that hard work is enough to thrive in today’s economy. It takes a certain amount of ego to be a business owner and leader. It also takes a healthy dose of humility to recognize that you don’t have all the answers and that while re-inventing the wheel is quite possible, doing so takes a lot longer and in the long-run is a lot more expensive than seeking the expertise and advise from others who can simply provide the type of wheel you need!

I believe building meaningful and lasting relationships is the key to success. Outside of your customers, employees and suppliers, what kind of relationships are you building? Typical examples include: (a) bankers, (b) attorneys, (c) accountants and (d) risk management advisors. Other valuable relationships include: (a) business coach, (b) peer advisory group, (c) mentors, (d) board of advisors. Which relationships currently serve you and your business? Which relationships have come to a logical end?

During this last month of the year, be thoughtful and intentional while developing personal and business goals. Invest some time and decide which relationships need to be strengthened while at the same time deciding which relationships have run their course. Companies evolve and so do their needs. As an owner, the same can be said for you too!

The big problem I keep hearing from business owners is that they are highly stressed while lacking clarity, direction, purpose and an achievable plan.
